The secret of creating peace

The secret of creating peace is that when you listen to other people you have only one purpose: to offer them an opportunity to open their hearts. If you can keep that awareness and compassion alive in you, then you can sit and listen for an hour even if the other person expresses wrong perceptions, condemnation, and bitterness. You can continue to listen because you are protected by the nectar of compassion in your own heart. Keeping your awareness keeps you safe in your own peace.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

The present moment is filled with joy and happiness

The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Please call me by my true name

Please call me by my true names,
so I can hear all my cries and
laughter at once,

so I see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can wake up

and the door of my heart

can be left open,
the door of compassion.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

The day of our death

One day as I was about to step on a dry leaf, I saw the leaf in the ultimate dimension. I saw that it was not really dead, but that it was merging with the moist soil in order to appear on the tree the following spring in another form. I smiled at the leaf and said, "You are pretending." Everything is pretending to be born and pretending to die, including that leaf. The Buddha said, "When conditions are sufficient, the body reveals itself, and we say the body exists. When conditions are not sufficient, the body cannot be perceived by us, and we say the body does not exist." The day of our "death" is a day of our continuation in many other forms.

Peace is every step

Peace is every step.
The shining red sun is my heart.
Each flower smiles with me.
How green, how fresh all that grows.
How cool the wind blows.
Peace is every step.
It turns the endless path to joy.

The present moment is where life can be found

The present moment is where life can be found, and if you don't arrive there you miss your appointment with life. You don't have to run anymore. Breathing in, we say, "I have arrived." Breathing out, we say, "I am home." This is a very strong practice, a very deep practice.
~ from THE PRESENT MOMENT by Thich Nhat Hanh

If one person remains solid and calm

Without doing anything, things can sometimes go more smoothly just because of our peaceful presence. In a small boat when a storm comes, if one person remains solid and calm, others will not panic and the boat is more likely to stay afloat.

~ from LOVE IN ACTION by Thich Nhat Hanh

Breathing in, breathing out

Breathing in I calm my body and mind.
Breathing out I smile.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

When you rest in God, you just go home to yourself

When you rest in God, you just go home to yourself like the wave on the water. If the wave continues to search, she will never find the water. The only way to find the water is to go home to herself. When she realizes that she is water, she has peace. She practices resting in God in the here and the now. Although she continues to rise and fall, she is peaceful. We can practice Love as the ground of our being: Home.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Wisdom is a living stream

Wisdom is a living stream, not an icon preserved in a museum.  Only when we find the spring of wisdom in our own life can it flow to future generations.
