Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear,
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye
clear. What we need is here.
~ Wendell Berry, excerpt from "The Wild Geese" in THE SELECTED POEMS OF WENDELL BERRY
I think, to a poet, the human community is like the
community of birds to a bird, singing to each other.
Love is one of the reasons we are singing to one another,
love of language itself, love of sound, love of singing
itself, and love of the other birds.
